As over a billion Catholics celebrate the “Jubilee of Mercy” around the world, the Holy Father invited the faithful to pray for a war-free world. Hours before he attended the closing ceremony of an international summit of interfaith leaders to pray for world peace in Assisi, Italy, Pope Francis told the audience that “There is no god of war” for God himself is a “God of peace.” The Pope pointed out that no matter where one lives, he/she is troubled by the war. The war “[is] very close because, [it] touches everyone. War begins in the heart,” implied the Pope Francis.
Promoting peace amongst rival fractions around the world has been central part of Pope Francis’ papal mission. Since Pope Francis ascended to the Papacy he has forcefully urged world leaders to work for peace and social justice. In Support for global peace, the Holy Father was instrumental in the normalization of diplomatic relations between the United and Cuba.
Similarly, he has encouraged Colombian leaders to find a peaceful solution to end one of the world’s longest armed conflicts. The Holy See Press announced that Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State is scheduled to attend the “Colombian Peace Accord” between the Colombian Government and Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) on 26 Sept.
Pope Francis has made social service as part of his Year of Mercy’s activities. On Sept. 16, 2016, he made a surprise visit at a hospital that provides care for newborn children. The Pope visited refugee camps for displaced Syrian families; he provided assistance to some of the families that were forced to leave their home because of civil war. ©WP
